Lesson Plans:

Blending Fiction and Nonfiction
This lesson supports the use of a text set (paired fiction and nonfiction texts on a similar topic) to increase student interest in and understanding of content area material and to develop critical writing skills.

Alaskan Native Stories

This lesson uses traditional stories of the Native peoples (i.e., narrative text) to introduce students to the study of animals in Alaska (i.e., expository text).

World War II Memory Book                                                                                                           
Students write and publish an oral history of a relative or friend's experiences of life during World War II.

Writing a Movie: Summarizing and Rereading a Film Script
Students view a short segment of a film, write descriptions, and read the descriptions expressively.

 Would you rather drive an Avalanche, an Aztek, a Bravada, a Suburban or a Vue?
In this mini-lesson, students examine familiar car names for underlying connotations.

Writing: Text Structure: These sites explain the different types of text structures that are used in expository writing. The text structures include chronological sequence, comparison/contrast, description, problem/solution, and cause and effect.
