  1. Incorporate new vocabulary as a part of daily written language
  2. Engage in word study activities

Examples: synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, multiple meaning words, concept mapping, webbing, analogies


Lesson Plans:

Internalization of Vocabulary Through the Use of a Word Map
This lesson provides students with a concrete way to learn vocabulary. The instruction is interactive, provides practice with words, and develops both definitional and contextual knowledge.

ABC Bookmaking Builds Vocabulary
This lesson engages and motivates students in building content area vocabulary through the creation of ABC books. Students select vocabulary words and terms based on a unit of study from their content area.

Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
Students will understand the function of the three basic kinds of adjectives.

Choosing, Chatting and Collecting: Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy
The vocabulary self-collection strategy involves having students choose the words they want to learn, chat about their rationale for selecting words, and agree upon words for a classroom collection.

Flip-a-Chip: Examining Affixes and Roots to Build Vocabulary
In this activity students will be using chips that are printed with word parts. Students write paragraphs leaving blanks for the words that can be flipped from their chips.
