Benchmark H: Edit writing for conventions (COS 25-28, 30, 31/ SAT 10)
  1. Capitalize proper nouns, the first word of sentences and quotations, and necessary parts of a letter
  2. Punctuate using periods, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes with contractions and possessives, commas (items in a series, cities and states, compound sentences, to set off appositives, in a direct address,) quotation marks with dialogue, and colons to introduce a listing
  3. Use conventional spelling for grade-appropriate words
  4. Use knowledge of sounds and letters to phonetically write advanced words
  5. Use appropriate grammar (parts of speech, subject-verb agreement with simple and compound subjects appropriate tenses- present, past, and future, and special usage problems such a double negatives
  6. Use correct abbreviations
  7. Use correct sentence structure (edit awkward construction, fragments, run-ons redundancy)

Puzzled Over Paragraphs
Launch your writing explorations by having students review what they already know about paragraphs and list what they'd like to learn.

Pondering the Parts of Speech
Students will analyze sentences in terms of length, type, structure, and style. 
Cooperative groups will locate examples of an assigned part of speech to create a poster that will be shared with the class.

Successful Paragraphs
This activity guides students through the writing process for a successful five-sentence paragraph with varied sentence beginnings.
