Introduction

The purpose of this WebQuest is to develop and fulfill the requirements necessary for integrating technology within the language arts, mathematics, and technology curricular.

 

The student groups will work cooperatively and individually, use the Internet resources, create a teen math magazine, and conclude with a power point presentation.

 

The purpose of the technology-based activity is to:

• Engage and guide students in Internet use.
• Provide student collaboration through groups that assists in developing interpersonal and communication skills.
• Provide an authentic learning environment relating math to the real world.
• Assist in the development of higher order thinking skills.

 

This WebQuest was modified to meet the language arts, mathematics, and technology curricular standards for grade 8.  This may be modified for grades 6 and 7.  For a successful WebQuest, students should be knowledgeable with the Internet and Microsoft Power Point.

 

 

Curriculum Standards

This WebQuest was modified to meet the Alabama Course of Study Objectives for mathematics, technology, and language arts.

 

Mathematics

• Use problem-solving strategies
• Develop an understanding of algebraic terms
• Translate verbal phrases and sentences into symbolic notation
• Identify missing information in problem-solving situations

 

Technology

• Cite electronic sources properly
• Apply productivity/multimedia tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, group collaboration, communication, and learning through the curriculum.
• Follow procedures to design, develop, publish, and present products using technology resources that demonstrate and communicate curriculum concepts to audiences inside and outside the classroom.
• Integrate word processing skills across the curriculum.
• Use Boolean operators to execute complex searches.

 

Language Arts

• Read with ease materials encountered in daily life.
• Utilize the studying process with independence to manage information.
• Conduct individual research, utilizing all aspects of the research process.
• Internalize the writing process.
• Compose and present in many forms, using different techniques for various audiences.
• Exhibit proficiency in the use of computer technology to enhance reading and writing skills.
• Evaluate personal writing processes individually and collaboratively.

 

 

Implementation

This WebQuest has been modified for groups of five students.  This project should take no longer than two weeks, working independently and cooperatively.  Each group will be assigned by the teacher so each student works together well within the group setting.  Each group will decide the role assignments.  Students should be given an outline stating the tasks and the deadlines for each magazine piece.
