Solving
Systems of Equations

This is a WebQuest for Algebra 1 students. A system of equations is defined as two or more equations that may or may not share a common point. If the lines intersect, there is one and only one solution. If the lines are parallel, there are no common points shared, thus no solutions. If the lines are the same line (i.e. one line lying on top of the other), there are infinitely many solutions. Systems of Equations are used in solving word problems as well as Algebraic problems.
You
will find three ways of solving Systems of Equations. Websites will be provided for you to browse
and practice the three methods. You will
be able to explain each method to your class of peers. You will describe the three methods in detail
in an oral presentation. After oral
presentations, you will complete the Chapter 7 test.
Visit
each website in the order that they are listed, take notes, and do the examples
and problems. Make sure that your notes
are in your own words and are not copied directly from the sites.
The
websites are as follows:
1.
Regentsprep Make sure that you study the lessons before
completing the practice problems. When
you get to the site, hit the L for lessons or the P for practice. When you are finished with each, hit the
button that says “Back to Linear Systems”.
2.
Substitution Explanations Make sure you view this site for more
explanations of substitution.
3.
Solutions
through graphing
Make sure you view the first four
pages that explain graphing, substitution, and elimination.
4.
More Practice Make sure that you do all problems,
including the fraction and decimal problems. Graph problems #1 - 6 on the graph
paper provided in the classroom. Your graph should give you the same solution
you found algebraically.

Congratulations
on completing the webquest. You have
learned the methods of solving through substitution, elimination, and graphing. You have mastered solving systems of
equations and you have found out that your computer can be an educational tool
instead of just a means to play solitaire.
